Senior Backend Engineer

Location: Remote within Europe (Portugal, Ukraine, or Romania preferred)

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and scale the core services that power our payments infrastructure. You will play a key role in shaping system architecture, improving reliability, and ensuring our platform remains secure, scalable, and compliant in a regulated fintech environment.

You will work in a small, agile product team alongside frontend engineers, DevOps, and product stakeholders.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js, TypeScript

• Architect and develop REST APIs and microservices

• Implement and optimize GraphQL and API Gateway solutions

• Design and optimize database schemas and queries in PostgreSQL and MongoDB

• Ensure high performance, availability, and security of services

• Work closely with DevOps to deploy and manage services on AWS

• Use Docker for containerization and ensure service reliability

• Improve backend development standards, architecture, and processes

• Participate in code reviews and technical discussions

• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering excellence

What We’re Looking For

• Strong experience with Node.js, TypeScript, and backend architecture

• Solid experience designing scalable REST APIs and microservices

• Deep understanding of PostgreSQL and/or MongoDB

• Experience working with AWS cloud infrastructure

• Experience with Docker and containerized environments

• Strong understanding of system design, scalability, and security

• Ownership mindset and proactive problem-solving skills

• Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally

Nice to Have

• Experience in fintech, payments, or regulated environments (EMI, FCA-regulated companies)

• Familiarity with high-availability systems and financial transaction flows

• Experience optimizing performance in distributed systems
